Phishing Emails & Phone Call Scams

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick word of caution from the Board. Recently there have been a number of "phishing" scams received by some of our Residents via phone calls and emails. They can be alarming and sound very official.

For those unfamiliar with the term, "phishing," is the fraudulent practice of sending emails or making phone calls purporting to be from reputable companies in order to get individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords, credit card numbers, etc.

They may claim to be from Social Security services, a utility company such as Edison, someone from your credit card company or even a major retailer like Amazon.

If you receive an email that looks fishy, please do not reply, click on any links or open any attachments. Doing so may provide the fraudsters access to your personal and private information saved on your computer.

If you receive a phone call and the person claims to be from a company such as Social Security, Amazon or your credit card company, the best course of action is to let them know that you will call the company back at a later time.

Do not call back the number they called from. Either call the number on the back of your credit card or Google search for the customer service number of the company they claim to be from to ensure the call you received was legitimate and not a scam.
